Title: Wheel rebuild - A65
Post by: jeffwkirby on 23 Apr, 2025, 16:50
Hi, I am struggling to rebuild my wheels and I am beginning to think I do not have the right parts.
I am based in the Basingstoke area was wondering if there is anyone local that can show me a completed wheel so I can compare and see that a)I've the right/wrong parts and b) how it actually looks. I have searched for images but none show the angle I need.

I can see the risk here, but if anyone replies I'll message direct so no details are shared over the forum.

Thanks in advance

I think there is 4 different wheels for the front of an A65.I don't know about the rear, I would quess the same.

It might help if we knew Model and year. Also are they conical or full width hubs.

Hi, 1966 (according to the V5), Lightning, A65L.
Front wheel 19", fitting WM2 size, 8" single side brake, looks like a casting (black).
Rear wheel 19", fitting WM2 size, QD fitting.

Thanks

Have you looked in the Members Area of the BSAOC website - there's a parts book there showing exploded view of the wheel / hub which might help?

If the OP has a crinkle hub he can't really go wrong (if the spokes are correct). The hub holes "point" in the direction the spokes should go, and are drilled differently for inners and outers.

Hi Gup, apologies for the long delay, have been away on holiday.

The images are great, and I will study, however its the front wheel I'm struggling with. Got any pictures of that?
I think the spokes I have are incorrect, but the supplier states they are right for rim and hub...I know one side from the other (long and short spokes), but the longs ones just appear to have the wrong bend (and I never kept an original example!! - should have done)
Off to the Kempton Auto Jumble tomnorrow, hopefully I can view a wheel or two.

I built a square four front wheel a few years ago and I struggled with the spokes until I realised that the rim was directional and I had I the wrong way round .

Every half-width brake drum wheel rim is, due to the differing diameters of the spoke flanges.
I've heard of several Ebay spoke purchases where the bends are nowhere near what they should be, and so it's always best to stick to CWC or Devon in my experience.
That said, some original manufacturers specified really odd spoke head angles, and so a judicious tapping with a rubber mallet (after lacing) is sometimes required to get the spokes laying "flat"
