Title: BSA B33 (1960)
Post by: Kevg on 06 Mar, 2025, 11:57
Recently picked up a 1960 B33 and changing the oils - Rather than trawl through the oil thread......can I get a yay or nay please on my suggested oils
Engine Morris SAE50 Classic Motor oil
Gearbox Morris AG90 Classic Gear oil
Primary - any 10w?

I've used Morris in my other bikes no probs so that's why I suggested them

Thank You

Hi
Right or wrong ive just gone for Smith and Allen straight 40 non detergent for my engine oil change.

I nearly went for the Morris stuff but it says on the can Low detergent ?, had been warned against it though?

Confused a little as the Haynes manual says sae 30 winter / sae 50 summer  or 20w/50
and the same oil for gearbox and primary.

Just waiting for the back lash now

Thanks for the reply and info Mark

I'll take a look at the Smith and Allen oil. The non detergent may be a better bet

Yea,the manual I have also says the same, 50 weight for the summer and to use the same in the box and primary

Just wanted to see what others were using before I purchased the oils

Thanks again

I use Smith and Allen non detergent SAE40 oil in my B32. I think the 40 weight oil is a good compromise between 50 for summer and 30 for winter. The bike never gets used in winter and our summers here in Scotland are never that hot anyway  :(
Importantly, unless the engine has been stripped and completely cleaned internally you should never use a detergent oil as it will loosen the crud which will have accumulated in nooks and crannies allowing it to circulate with the oil, possibly causing damage.

This was the scenario I was warned about.
