Title: Plunger question
Post by: watts on 15 Feb, 2025, 19:14
1952 M20 Plunger carrier assembly.

One on mine has been 'modified' by a previous owner.

They have shortened and which means there is no bush at either end.

I have the solid column type.

I have some who can make one but not sure how tight a fit and material to use to make the bushes.

Are the columns chromed?

Thanks

Matthew

I also wondered if they are a pair, having different size holes for the axel.
Thanks

Hi,

This looks about right.  The tube held in the lug is shorter so that it can slide up and down. The bushes are in each end. Clean the ends and you should see the different colour of the bush. After allowing for the main column to be fitted in the frame, the sliding tube will be perhaps be a couple of inches shorter to allow for suspension movement.  If you re-assemble the in the frame without the springs it will all make sense.
The main column would originally probably have been a tube but solid is fine as it is the fit that is important. I think the bushes are of 'Oilite' material. There may be a fitted tolerance but they need to be as tight a sliding fit as possible to get the best result. It is vital that they are well greased during assembly and regularly afterwards.

Dave.

Hello Dave
Thank you.
The longer one is nice and snug, the shorter is sloppy, I did not see any bearing material but I look again.
Is one supposed to be shorter than the other?

Thanks
Matthew

Hi,

The tubes should be the same length.  It could be that they have been home made to replace the originals.  If the main 'pillars' are in good condition bushes could be made to best fit.

I have checked again there is a bush in the sloppy one but both ends look like they have been hit with chisel to get it out and now the bush is 10-15mm shorter both ends.

I can get one made is the bush material special and how tight should it be?  Does anyone know?

Thanks
Matthew
