Title: A65 Coils
Post by: PeterR on 10 Feb, 2025, 07:33
Hi all, I am nearing the end of my very protracted rebuild after a catastrophic big end failure on my 1970 A65 Lightning.  I am about to reinstall the coils, and noticed that they are 6V, whereas the overall ignition system is 12V.  The bike has a Tri-Spark electronic ignition, and I recall some online chat about using 6V coils with such systems.  Should I replace the coils with new 12V units that are available in the smaller 40mm dia size?  The existing coils were working OK but the bike was often challenging to start, acknowledging that there may have been other contributing factors.

2 x 6V coils connected in series provides a 12V output Peter and is the standard configuration. If you switch to a 12V coil you only need one.

Hi,

Would that be one 12v coil with twin output?

Dave.

Thanks Big Phil & Dave, much appreciated.  My uncertainty stems from the BSA Workshop Manual for 1969-70 models, which specifies the original coils (2) as Lucas MA12, which I understand means 12V?
