Title: A65 crankcases
Post by: TimRobinson on 29 Oct, 2024, 08:52
I have recently bought an A65 Lightning as a retirement project that seems to have recently been reassembled, perhaps from a variety of models.  It was advertised as 1969 but I am trying to identify the crankcases which have a square lug as seen in the photo.  Can anyone tell me what this is?
Thanks
Tim

Hi,

I have never seen a plug like this.  The square suggests some sort of plumbing bung.
The circular mark is where the gearbox oil filler was on earlier models that had a level plug rather than a dipstick.  Perhaps a previous owner though that the gear box needed a breather but it looks like it has not been fitted quite square to the casing.

Dave.

Thanks Dave

I could not find any images of a similar arrangement.

I guess all will be revealed once I start taking it apart.

Definitely a plumbing action.

Thanks for the responses.  In case anyone is interested, it is a simple, poorly executed, plug.  I will be adding ally welding to the list of jobs!
