Title: Fuel hose
Post by: Barnsey on 29 Oct, 2024, 07:51
I have ordered a meter of 6mm PVC hose to use as fuel pipe as I like being able to see that the fuel is flowing.  It was advertised as petrol proof, but would I have been better off with the traditional black stuff?

Hi,

I have used both.  After a while the clear pipe gets very stiff and yellows whereas the black pipe can tend to get small radial cracks over time.  I have not had either leak as I tend to replace them now and again.

I just bought some 8mm (5/16) black rubber with stainless steel braid and end caps with stainless clamps
Said in description to be Ethanol resistant.
I've had the clear stuff go yellow and brittle (admittedly quite old) and some black stuff get lots of little fine cracks (labelled as fuel hose, admittedly few years old and not E compatible.  Last time was on my Landrover - I replaced the fuel tank (it had sat for a week with no fuel in prior) when I switched on all these previously unknown cracks appeared in the engine bay run of the pipe - miles away from the tank/pump!
Dave's suggestion is probably a good one either way.

That is great thanks!  I'll give the PVC a go and be prepared to replace it once in a while.

I have been told about a clear fuel line called Tygon it's supposed to be resistant to E10 and oil, never used it but I think I will give it a try next time I need new lines.

I'been using this stuff which is very fleaxible and doesn't seem to affected by E5 anyway. And it's cheap! https://www.carbuilder.com/products/low-pressure-fuel-vent-drain-hose-6mm-2?_pos=6&_sid=f323e7b09&_ss=r

Hi,

I would think that, unless you find really old stock, and fuel/oil pipe will be E5 and E10 compatible especially when it has probably been made overseas. I usually get mine from Wilco or Halfords.
