Title: 1964 C15f
Post by: Rusty nuts 2024 on 28 Oct, 2024, 12:13
Hi Everyone, im new to the group, just bought another C15 after not owning one for a while, in this picture the hole in the case has been elongated and striped of its thread, do you think that this is a bad repair or does it serve a purpose?

I think that's the hole which holds the rear chain oiler.

A bolt goes through the hole and screws into the oiler, so no thread in the hole. The slot is to catch the oil as it's thrown around inside the chain case by the clutch.
RR recommends blanking the hole with a bolt and maybe a couple of washers.

I hadn't noticed that RR recommends blanking it off - do you know why?  I had found that the original chain oiler was in the assorted jumble with my project, so I was intending fitting it.

Depends on how much oil your oiler throws out! If you use the bike and want it to stay clean in that area blank it off and periodically use aerosol chain lube instead.

Thanks for your help
could it be said that this was also used as the breather?

Hi,

I would not used as a breather as it is a ver small outlet and the primary case should not really get pressurised.
I had the oiler on one of my B40s and it worked really well with the chain remaining lubricated just about enough.  The little outlet pipe on mine was filled with solder with less than pin hole to let the oil out. The chain lasted long time and needed no other lubrication.

I'm sure BSA were clever enough to design and fit this little oiler.
But it does rely of course upon rider participation every now and then checking the primary oil level.

Hi,

They were also fitted to A65s and I think R3s.

There is one on my A50 - and I have never oiled the chain in 27 years of owning and riding it - on the same chain and sprockets. Yes, it does deposit the odd drip of oil from that area when parked - which reassures me everything is as it should be!  But I take Rupert's point - I will try the C15 one (when the project is complete) and see if the supply is as finely judged as my A50 chain oiler.
