Title: Dismantling B31 plunger rear suspension
Post by: yellow B31 on 21 Oct, 2024, 13:44
I have the BSA book of service sheets and also a genuine instruction manual.
The service sheets show special BSA tools to dismantle and re assemble where as the instruction manual says it all can be done without service tools. Can it?
Is it a struggle and better done with some home made tools to aid assembly.
I know from experience that tools are required to do the same job on a Norton.

I too have done it on a Norton and it was a pretty scary operation! But the only special "tool" was a long 1/4" threaded rod and a couple of penny washers. I would avise against trying without as those springs can pack a pretty punch.

This is my Norton tool.

I guessed I would need that arrangement. Thanks.

When you look into YouTube you will find guy using some carpenter bench clamp.

For my plunger B33 I have used that method and had no problem . Worked fine.

I did it on mine using nothing more than arm strength and my weight. On BSA's it's do-able, unlike Nortons which are apparently sods to do without tools.
