Title: Blue Star Brakes
Post by: Hot Frog on 18 Oct, 2024, 05:37
My latest cry for help!

Battling with a 1931 Blue Star 350, the back brake has me stumped.

My pedal is on the left and the brake is on the right.

The Parts Book outlines a 29 inch rod crossing under the bike but I cannot for the life of me see the finished set up. Could someone send me a picture?

I know this will mean lying on the ground for a while, but I would be immensely grateful, not least because the pedal will need some serious fettling to get it to the correct design.

A crossover shaft would work, but not for 1931!

Many thanks

As far as I can tell, the L31-6 Blue Star was fitted with a hand change 3 speed gearbox which would have the brake pedal on the right. There is no mention of a 4 speed footchange gearbox in the Parts Book, which would have the brake pedal on the left. If I'm right about this, perhaps someone has modified your motorcycle?

The 29" rod you refer to would be 15-7932, and is not a cross over shaft, but the rod which connects the right hand brake pedal to the lever on the brake plate.
The right hand brake pedal pivots on a short shaft fitted to the lug just behind the footpeg lug on the right hand chainstay.
The footchange gearbox with brake cross shaft and left hand brake pedal wasn't introduced until 1932.
Unfortunately there is no lug for a cross shaft on the left hand chainstay on 1931 models.
Perhaps you could confirm you have a 3 speed gearbox with handchange, and post some pictures of your setup?
For example, if your left hand pedal is fitted to a lug behind the footrest lug, this indicated you have a 1932 left hand chainstay. If so, you might be able to fit 24-8076 cross shaft, shown on page 225 of the 1932 Parts Book, although these are very rare. You will also need 24-8072 two pronged lever for the other end of the shaft.
Hope this makes sense.

Further to my previous post, as far as I can gather, the actual Blue Star range was not introduced by BSA until 1932, which would make your model a 3.49 HP L31-6 OHV De-Luxe, which was not called a Blue Star by BSA. I suppose it would depend on the Engine and Frame numbers. I wonder what year and model it really is, because as I suggested, the 1931 350 would have left the Factory with the brake pedal on the right, and a hand change 3 speed gearbox.
