Title: BSA B18 custom deluxe
Post by: Kgtime on 28 Sep, 2024, 18:58
Hello to all, I am a owner of a 1936 BSA B18 and was working on the clutch.
Can anyone tell me how to remove the clutch basket? I have everything disassembled but can not remove the clutch basket. Is there some kind of special tool for removal?
Thanks in advance
Kevin

That looks like you will require a puller.
Remove the push rod and I suspect it will screw on to the hub.

Hi,

It would look like this.  This one is for six spring clutch but may be the same.

Dave.

OK great, that helps a lot. At least I now know how it is removed properly, any idea where to buy this tool?
I would make one but I don't have any way of making Withworth threads that size.
Thanks so much for the reply,
Kevin

Awesome thank you very much for finding that. After you posted the picture of the puller,I ended up improvising and making my own. I'm still going to buy the proper puller from the link you sent me  so I have the proper one in my toolbox. I can't thank you enough for sending the picture so I knew what it takes to remove it.
Thanks,
Kevin

I'm surprised you haven't lost your balls. I always loose mine, but then my ring is rather loose.

Ron,
All of my '30's hubs are 1 3/16" 24 tpi.
The bloke on ebay quotes 1 1/4" 24 tpi, and Fecked.com quote 1 3/16" 26 tpi for the same part number, which is not very helpful.
I imagine you have this tool in your armoury?
Assuming it's the same tool, any chance of taking a measurement?
Steve.

I'll check tomorrow Steve. I have at least 3 bikes with the 6 spring clutch, so I must have something that fits. Ron

Thanks for that Ron, but the clutch hub in question is the single spring clutch.

I am in the process of restoring a B18 like yours, however I am missing the gear change lever and quadrant or gate.
Would you be good enough  to draw round yours on cardboard including any critical dimensions and send  the to me as templates to fabricate replacement parts. As they were only made in very low numbers the chance of finding any used parts is practically  non existant.
I will happily pay any costs incurred.
Kind regards
Mark

Ah Steve I stand corrected. The single spring, otherwise known as the "Empire Star" clutch has an internal thread.

Here is the tool I made up for replacing the spring, using an old Triumph piston, and my special sockets for the nuts.  Ron

Ron,
I wonder if there might still be a little confusion here?
My clutch hubs all look like Mr.KG's photo, with external thread, so clearly the tool will have an internal thread.
As far as I can tell, the C10 and B29 have an internal thread and the M20 has a short external thread, but I have no experience of these machines.
My feeling is that the pullers with internal threads available on ebay and fecked.com are for the M20, and may not have the same diameter and tpi as the single spring hub. But I really don't know.
If I'm right about the M20, and you have the puller, could you measure the thread?

Steve.

Yes Steve I've worked on plenty of the M20 clutches and they all have an internal thread for the 1" puller. I have at least two of the pullers. I assumed that the earlier "Empire Star" single spring clutch was the same. But my parts lists only go back to 1939. Ron

PS although this is the section that interests me, my bikes are hardly pre war. I have a 1939 and 1940 models WD C10's a 1940 WB30 and a 1940 WM20.

Thanks for clearing that up, Ron.
I suppose a Pre War motorcycle is anything manufactured before 11 am on 3rd September 1939?
If Kg has bought this puller, could he tell us if it fits?

You're right Steve and both my C10's meet the criteria. (My WC10 though a 1940 model was delivered in August 39). However there is still that 1939-45 gap.  :-\   Ron

The 3 yaw puller worked perfect as posted. I am still waiting on the proper tool to arrive but if anyone needs to remove there clutch without this (custom)tool the 3 jaw puller worked perfect. Yes by the way, the bearing balls will fall every where. No worries the standard SAE sizes work perfect as a replacement.

Sorry for the delay I have been out of town. I will get you a nice drawing of the 4 speed shift gate in detail so you can get one custom made. Give me a few days.
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin, so your clutch has balls? The M20 clutches have 1/4"x 1/4" rollers. Ron

Ron,
Hope I'm not being rude, stepping in to answer your question to Kevin, but yes, it has 40 3/16" balls. Clearly, the M20 is a far more sophisticated design?
They run in a groove machined into the hub. They are held in place by 2 brass rings which have different part numbers.
One is thicker than the other. I have assumed that the thinner one goes on first and would be a normal interference fit.
However, I think the outer one should perhaps be a thumb push fit, as it is not positioned or held in place by the inner steel disc which runs close to it. It seems to me that pre-load/clearance would be important, so I'm surprised that no mention of this is made in the Instruction Book, or have I got this all wrong?
As I said, my outer ring is a bit loose, so I just assemble it as best I can, and it seems to work OK, but I imagine my clutch wobbles more than it should. I've posted about this before, but got no response.
The only problem I have is oil impregnating the inner disc behind the clutch chainwheel, causing it to slip, even though the oiling is turned right down. I'm going to experiment with an automatic transmission disc, and see if that cures it.
Kevin, do let us know if your tool fits, although you will probably have reassembled the clutch by the time you receive it.
Another way to remove the hub, if the ring nut threads are a bit shagged, is to remove the bearing and inner plate, and use a puller behind the hub, but then you have the tedious task of reassembling the 40 balls.

Well as you probably know Steve, my 6 spring clutches have a similar arrangement of steel balls trapped in two brass rings. I ordered one of Drags ally ring kits for my B30, but it went back as it wouldn't fit on any of the 5 clutches I had to choose from >:( I managed to assemble the two brass rings with new balls. Ron

Ron,
We seem to be hijacking Kevins original post, which is probably Verboten, so I shall expect a knock at the door.
However, I know nothing of your later clutches, but as far as I can work out they had two (2) one piece ball retainers, already assembled, so it looks like Draganfly modified the design to one double row cage?
It seems the ball retainers fit onto an inner ring with 2 grooves machined in, which is an interference fit onto the clutch sleeve.
If I've got this right, it seems a far better arrangement, with no need for adjustment of the bearing.
However, I can't quite work out what 65-3912 Ballrace ring is. Is it a hardened ring fitted to the chainwheel for the bearing to run on? It looks rather too narrow for that. Perhaps it's just a spacer?
I can't quite see where the rollers you mention come into it?  Perhaps BSA modified the arrangement for later clutches?

I'm sure Kevin won't mind, we are sort of on topic and all learning different things.

Here is the M20 clutch showing the rollers #65 x22.  Ron

We're at cross purposes here Steve. You asked about the rollers. The only rollers I mentioned are in the M20 clutch.

Otherwise this is the type of 6 spring clutches I have.  Ron

This is a post reply for Mark B18 regarding a request for a shift pattern on a 1936 BSA B18 4-speed shift gate.
I attached 2 drawings one with and one without dimensions. I hope this helps you.
Thanks,
