Title: Twin plug conversion Qs on B44
Post by: AndrewB44 on 22 Sep, 2024, 18:38
I'm approaching the electrics part of my B44 build, with a new wiring harness ready to install.

Some years ago when I had the crank ground and fitted to the crank cases the engineering co (over Baldock way if I recall) also modified the head for a twin plug conversion. I have an electronic ignition kit but no coil(s).

Might seem a daft question but does this mean I need two coils or a single coil somehow running two HT leads? And how does the timing work - ie do they fire simultaneously or does the extra plug fire shortly after the first to ignite unspent gases? Can someone also point me to somewhere I can buy the coils and plugs? I recall the extra plug is a 10mm version...I really should have made better notes back then!

Dual outlet coils are readily available, any japanese four use them. Boyer of Bromley is worth calling. If you are running points, primary coil resistance is not so critical but electronic ignition has specific ohms.

Thanks for the tip - I'll call them tomorrow!

Daft Q but is this my coil? Going through the electrical ignition kit that came with the bike and this is with it, seems to have twin plug wires leading from it...

Yes. The giveaway is the two plug leads coming off it.
With respect, worrying about twin plugs on a B44 seems a little deep at this level of ownership?

Ha! Yeah - tbh I should have just kept it standard and made upgrades like this further down the line. I'm more used to working on cars (been running/self maintaining/rebuilding MGs and BMWs for decades) and I do all the maintenance on my modern bikes (Guzzi V7ii, Suzuki Van Van etc) but the big difference is they came to me whole, so I have a reference when things break or need improving because my starting point is an assembled vehicle.

The Beeza however came to me in bits, and not all original to the bike, with many missing and few examples I can look at in detail to compare it to. So all I've got to go on is a parts book and the terrible photos in the Haynes manual - which is why this forum and you folk is such a help (and sorry for all my daft Qs - I'll have lots more). Coil threw me a little as I was expecting one more cylindrical, but the HT leads helped! Just need to source the right plugs and caps now.

Thanks again!
