Has anyone fitted a side stand to a '54 Plunger B31?
If so, do you have any pictures (close up) showing where you attached it and where you got it from please?
Really struggling to get it on the centre stand every time.
Thanks
Not on a B31 but have successfully used Kawasaki Z1100 stands on a couple of Nortons. They look OK and are quite easy to fit by making mounting plates. This is one on a plunger ES2.
Those ZX sidestands are nicely made, very adaptable and very cheap on Ebay.
The last one I fitted was to a Panther, and it was £12 delivered.
You do need a vertical engine or gearbox plate though.
Hi Fraz,
There are clamp on stands available that will fit a variety of bikes. Just google BSA clamp on side stands and lots of suppliers will pop up. I suspect that they all come from the same manufacturer.
They have to be really tight so that they do not turn on the frame. Worth checking regularly until they stay tight.
Dave.
I've got a side stand on my plunger B31. I'll try and remember to get a pic when next in the garage. I think it's a proper BSA item, and mounts quite far back on the frame.
Thanks.
Photos would be brilliant

Here is a photo of the side stand on my 1949 B33 with a plunger frame. It should be the same as your B31.
The rear clamp half is brazed or welded to the frame. The center of the clamp is about 2.25 inches rear if the boss that the brake pedal is mounted to.
Hope this helps.

Does this position allow room to activate the centre stand, and (picky, picky! :) ) is that 2.25" from the brake pedal boss edge, or from the centre?
Hi Rog
The 2.25 inches is from the center of the brake pedal boss. Maybe there is a frame drawing somewhere that indicates the correct position. I'll have a look.
I do have difficulty getting a toe hold on the double stand and I need to run the front wheel up on a ramp to get the bike onto the double stand. That is another topic...

I googled BSA B33 Frame Dimensions and got a drawing but it doesn't show a side stand lug.
I checked the 1949-1953 Parts Catalog, page 35 and it shows the side stand lug mounted foreward of the rear brake axle boss. According to this information, my bike does not comply with the frame drawing or the parts catalog.
However except for some difficulty to acces the center stand, my side stand, mounted rear of the brake pedal axle boss works great. The back half clamp of the stand was welded or brazed to the frame when I bought the bike. I'm not sure I would trust a stand that was only bolted to the frame.

I'm pretty sure BSA didn't fit this lug until about 1952/3.
I have a '51 ZB32 and a '51 Star Twin neither of which has the brazed-on half-lug of the later bikes.
I would guess you've had a replacement frame or someone's brazed a lug in place.
The bolt-on clamp type stands are OK if you add a small grubscrew in addition to the bolts, and don't even think about kicking her up on the side stand (as you shouldn't anyway!)
Sorry for the delay... mine is fitted behind the brake pivot. Judging by the welding on the bracket I would think not factory but you never know. Doesn't interfere with the mainstand and I can kick it down whilst sat on the bike no bother.
Yep, that's a (probably) Indian-made clamp on stand where someone has got so tired of the stand moving around the tube that he's tacked it in place.
Does the job though. :)
Could well be, but a very quick Google provides several photos of identical stands mounted in exactly the same manner? To me it feels older than any Indian made stand would be.

What is the length of your side stand please?
(Measured from the pivoting pin to the foot)
Many thanks
8.5 inches from the pivot to the foot.
