Title: Spokes thread size
Post by: franknjan on 07 Aug, 2024, 17:01
Hi. I'm looking to replacing my 7inch full width front hub with an 8 inch hub. The rim and spokes fitted are in good condition.
Just thinking,  it's just a matter of shortening the length of the spoke and rethreading.
Does anyone know the thread size?
Thanks.

Spokes are best with the stronger rolled threads rather than die cut.

The first photo shows a thread rolling tool on the left and a thread cutting tool/die holder on the right.

The second photo shows the dies for the cutting tool, I think the number on the die indicates the wire gauge of the spoke, It is very easy to cut the thread out of true and ruin/weaken the spoke without using the holder.

These tools were rescued from a retiring dealer some years back and I dont know anything more about them or about the threads used on current production spokes.

Probably best to source a new set of spokes for the 8 inch.

Unless the old rim has had the nipple holes punched very generously, you'll need a new rim too.
It would be cheaper and easier to build the wheel you want (ie new rim and spokes) and then sell the old wheel.

Would you consider selling these tools?

Sorry they have already found a new owner.
