Title: bad, bad day today!
Post by: maroon1953 on 30 Jul, 2024, 19:09
I feel sick today.
I had a health check date for myself today and decided to use my A7 long stroke early in the morning, without have a breakfast (for blood test) for a ride to the Dr. in the city.
I was a bit confused and in a hurry, but the A7 was running fine.
But after around 15 miles the bike become suddenly a bit "tired and suddenly the engine seized!!!

I had forgotten to open the a special oil tap at the oil tank!!!
What a stupid mistake.
Now I feel really ill.

I will start tomorrow to open the engine to see what parts of the engine are destroyed.

Hi Michael,

I suspect that there are those who dare not to own up to making the same error and it is the risk taken when fitting a tap in the oil line.
There are threads on the Forum that discuss this and if a tap cannot be voided then one with a switch built in seems the best way to go.
I would imagine that they are available so that a mag can be earthed like a cutout to prevent sparking and alternatively to break a circuit for coil ign. engines.
Some one out there will know exactly which one is best.

Dave.

Oil tap with switch from kingpin components. By far the best on the market.

zowie pops. i like the look of that doobrie from kimgpin.

they look like an answer to all my bikes. better than whacking thr oil pump with a sacrificial ball bearing (harley) that doesnt work anyway

while on the subject, I like the oil tap suggested but having worked on a few Yamaha Virago's make sure its positioned out of the wet or dirt. The Virago reserve fuel tank is low slung and the switch is below . They just seize up  as not used very often.

i was given a 750 virago many years ago.

never got anywhere close to that as the relays at ignition on had their own in house disco...had a good afro beat though.

no wonder i was given it. think i donated it to the goldwing owners club benelovent fund. i knew they'd cherish it

It was not the fault of the tap, but mine. It´s not good to use a bike, when not concentrated and nervous.       - Shit happens-

It is now important to get the bike b ack to life!

This morning I started to dismantle the engine:
The pistons have not seized, but drive side big end do. Flywheel seems to be free.
May be the timing side bush is okay.
I have to get out the complete enge off the frame to find out, what is to do with the big end.

Has The A7 LONGSTROKE  (!947 - 1950)  engine different big end shells to the A7 / A10 1950 on?
May be someone can help me with this question

Michael

I thought about a tap but knew one day I'd forget to open it so fitted an anti wet sumping valve (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/405107521214?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338268676&toolid=10044&customid=EAIaIQobChMIyfXH7_bWhwMVCZpQBh1HsASPEAQYASABEgJyAPD_BwE)

Its been on the super rocket for 25 years and on other bikes of mine for several years. Works v well.
