Title: Gold star 2023 No power to headlight or tachometer
Post by: McKoy on 27 Jul, 2024, 11:20
Hello all. Just wanted to introduce myself. Im new to the BSA owners forum and actually all forums 😊 I have just bought an accident damaged 2023 Goldstar. The headlamp was smashed and the left hand  foot peg broken. Apart from that there is no other cosmetic damage. It runs and everything works apart from the headlight and tachometer including tach light and fuel gauge indicator. The parking light and tail light works fine. All the fuses are fine. I realise this forum concentrates on the original British BSA's so apologies if I'm posting in the wrong place but I'm hoping somebody might be able to help. I can't wait to get on the road while we still have some sunshine so Im hoping somebody can help get me riding. 🤞🤞 Many thanks in advance 😊

I'm not familiar with the bike but I would suspect that a multi pin connector in the headlamp has been damaged / disconnected. Do you have a manual with a wiring diagram as otherwise you may be hunting in the dark?

One advantage of the old British bikes - at least after the mid 60s - is that most used the standard Lucas colours which makes life easier. Apart from those that used Wipac of course......

Welcome, McKoy.

iansoady got in before me, but we are of the same mind; Is there something missing, broken or disconnected in the headlight bowl? Whatever it is it'll be common to all those non working items. I can't see a wiring diagram online but if you haven't found it already, the owner's manual can be found here: https://bsacompany.b-cdn.net/wp-content/themes/grandprix/assets/img/BSA_Owners%20manual_Export_Updated_EN.pdf (https://bsacompany.b-cdn.net/wp-content/themes/grandprix/assets/img/BSA_Owners%20manual_Export_Updated_EN.pdf)

Hi,

The new Gold Star is included in this bit of the Forum and quite number of BSAOC members have these bikes so may be able to help.

Thank you so much to all for the prompt reply.
All the connections in the headlamp bowl seem fine and I can't see any broken wires.
There isn't a wiring diagram available for the general public. My local dealer advised me that it's only available to BSA agents.
Thank you so much again everybody.
Dave it's great to hear that the new BSA is included in this forum 😊😊

I think that the headlight should come on when the ignition is turned on, the engine cranked and engine rpm exceeds 1000rpm for the first time. This is to save battery power when starting. This system is used on other brands as well.
This means that there is a headlamp relay controlled by the engine ECU.  Is this relay being switched on?

Hi. Thanks so much for the reply. That's really useful information.
I wasn't aware that was how it worked. I do t know if there is a relay. I have followed the loom and can't identify a relay anywhere.Unfortunately I don't have access to a wiring diagram.
Any idea on why the tachometer isn't working?
Thanks 👍

I'm not too sure. The tachometer recieves it's signal from the ECU. It depends upon the system that BSA use. In general it can be either from a dedicated wire or via a shared network communication such as CAN BUS or a more basic system called K-line. The latter two share data between the ABS unit, tachometer,  engine ECU and any plug in diagnostic system.

Wow!! Thanks. That sounds pretty complicated. I'll have another look and try and check the wiring to those areas. I wonder if this might be something covered under the warranty. Maybe not though as it was involved in an accident. I'll check with the dealer.
Thanks again for your help 👍🙂🙂

There isn't necessarily a relay. I have two modern Ducatis that use this system and they have no relay. The headlight turning on is controlled directly by the dash which presumably has something like MOSfet transistors to handle the current. The dash itself gets its signals from the ECU via CANbus.

I don't know Ducati, but certainly Japanese bikes favour a relay. It depends who make the system for BSA.
One thing we are agreed upon is that the signal used to switch the lights on and operate the tachometer originate from the ECU.
I notice that there is an owners manual for download. This shows 9 fuses. Are all of these OK? Remember that the lights fuse may not necessarily control the ECU signal to turn them on!

Given the tachometer doesn't work either, and going by what's been said about the headlight only powering up when the revs reach 1,000, then that looks like a fruitful place to look for a problem - maybe in a connector going from the CDI to the rev counter?

I have to say if it was mine I'd probably rig a direct feed to the hedlamp with a N/C relay controlled by the starter button. At least as a tempoorrary workround. Having said that I don't ride around with my headlight on all the time except on those bikes that won't let me switch it off.

Did you buy from a dealer or privately and if the former was it sold as a running bike?

If the tacho, tacho light, and fuel Gauge are not working, as they are all in the same housing it is something common to all of them. That might be a wire that's only live when the ignition is on, but is far more likely to be an earth. You'll be able to establish the earth wire colour by looking for what colour wire is common to (say) the headlight, indicators, etc.

But if the tacho isn't working and the headlight only comes on when the engine revs pass a certain rpm, it'll never come on until the tacho is working. So fix the tacho, I reckon, and the headlight will start working.

There's a possibility that before you got the bike somebody else has tried to get things working and did a bit of random unplugging and plugging in, so something is plugged in to the wrong connector.
