Hi Bob,

If this a newly built engine then use a modern 20/50 and a full flow cartridge filter in the return oil line.  The detergent keeps the engine clean by keeping contaminants mobile to be removed by the filter in stead of being circulated until they are eventually caught in the sludge trap.  Also, fit a magnetic sum plug.  This is especially useful during running in when metallic sludge is produced. The magnet will at least remove any ferrous material from the oil and prevent it from passing through the oil pump.
Photos shows a very high mileage A65 (perhaps 125.000 miles or more) crank that finally needed new shells.  The sludge trap is almost empty and the amount that was cleaned out was not much more than a pound coin's worth.

Dave.

yeah i'd already worked out a 20w50 oil but have you seen how many yhere are.

if it were me and 30 years ago i'd be going for GTX . i know you can still get it but is GTX still GTX or is it now just thick bisto gravy granules and hot water.

i have some harley 20w50 oil but at the cost of it it would gouble the bikes value with a tank full

Hi,

I was using a commercial fleet oil from Fuchs but I do not need a 200lt drum again so settled on 20lt Millar's 'Pistonease'.  I looked at all the usual suspects and even asked the question re detergents and this seemed to the best option.  Price was also a consideration.
I suspect that they are all pretty much the same but my thinking was if running the filter a higher detergent level will work better.
Duckhams is still available if you have to have green oil.
