Title: A50 drive chain query
Post by: chaz on 14 Jul, 2024, 21:27
The rebuild has stalled , 1969 A50 , extended swing arm.
The original chain was rusty, Ive used the old rear hub but fitted a new front sprocket.
The original chain had 124 links, Ive bought a 530 O ring chain but although 124 links , its 4 links short. I cant find a supplier to get the extra links.

Im prepared to get a new chain but the catalogues end at 124 links , any recommendations for a chain supplier also is it 530 or a different size as the 520 is too small. Dont really want to buy a whole drum of chain.

can I just question the chain used on a 69 A50?
I ordered a 530  which is too wide, then the chainman sent me a 520, he said it was a narrow. I did query this as I thought the narrow was for Nortons.
Anyway, the 520 narrow is too small, the old chain rollers are more like 10mm (0.394") than 3/8 (0.375") and the rear sprocket is 3/8" wide

Hi Chaz,

The 5/8 x 3/8 chain is standard.  I take it that the 530 has too much sideways movement.  Is the sprocket worn allowing a bit more play?

Dave,
the 530 pins were too big and didnt fit on the sprockets, which is why the links were 4 short.
Rear sprocket looks ok, front is new, I called him and he is going to send a 5/8 one , the old bike has 520 stamped on the links and I did query with him about the Narrow fit he suggested as normally for Nortons.

Hi,

There is not lot of room for bigger chain on the A50/A65 as it could well rub on the back if the primary chain case and chain guard.  If it was running on an 'O' ring chan then the sprockets may well have been modified to take a 520 'O' ring which will probably be as bulky as a 5/8 x 3/8 standard chain.

just to clarify, I picked up the 530 chain as I got it cheap in the trade.
Its got a new front sprocket (19T I think ) and the rear is the one it came with (47t). checking the chain there is 520 stamped on the side plates.

Jason said if its a 520 it should be narrow, I did query as in one of my catalogues it says narrow was for Nortons The one he sent was 520 narrow and wont go over the sprocket. He said it was a 520 with 5/16" rollers. I rang yesterday ,the rollers on the old chain are 3/8" and 3/8" wide .and he said I needed the 520 which he had sent.
Now, Ive got to dig out the old front sprocket or part of the extended old chain to send as a sample.

Also said , he is moving premises so if you are thinking of calling , best to ring mobile first.

as for the extended swing arm, its 24" from pivot in frame to axle

surely the length of the swingarm wont affect chain size just chain length irrespective of any other issues

Bill, asked about the details of the extension, looks like its just an extension added as uses the normal front pivot and rear axle / tensioner fittings.
standard QD rear wheel and brake

what ever it is it wont affect the chain other than length
