Title: leaky gearbox speedo drive
Post by: DAVE BRADY on 13 Jul, 2024, 08:13
Good morning,

Anyone got any ideas for stopping a slow leak from the speedo drive on a plunger A10 gearbox. I would rather not strip the gear box so looking for an external fix.

Dave.

Hi,

The plunger box has the brass insert with no 'O' ring.  As it is a very high mileage bike I suspect that it just wear allowing oil down the shaft.  I have 'cut and shut' an 'O' ring using super glue to get a snug fit on both the square end of the inner cable and just in to the end of the brass insert.  Another thin 'O' ring over the ferule that compressed by the sleeve nut.  It will probably work but for how long only time will tell.

Dave.

I have used a short length of heat shrink cable tube over the joint between the ferrule and the outer cable. This helps keep the oil in the cable. The cable sleeve nut will just slide over the heat shrink. Photo shows my prototype. Bset if you can get more heatshrink on the ferrule.

The original Smiths cables used a circular crimp on the ferrule which kept the oil in a bit better than the crimp used on the current cables.

The later speedo driven gears were machined to take a quite flimsy O ring, if you can find one this helps keep the oil in the gearbox and out of the cable.

Some service bulletins below.
