Title: A10 Clutch Query
Post by: keating on 10 Jul, 2024, 20:38
I have owned an A10 for a few years and the 6 spring clutch has not given me any trouble, that is until last Saturday when on the way home from a Kent branch run I lost drive to the rear wheel and had to be recovered home by the AA. I have now got the chain case off and discovered that the nut holding the clutch to the main shaft had come loose. Needless to say there was no lock washer fitted. I have decided to check the plates etc for wear and renew as necessary. However, when I removed the clutch centre ( 42-3220) I discovered a thin spacer behind the clutch centre and in front of the ball race ring (65-3912).
This spacer measured as follows : O/D 1.8", I/D 1.4"  and the ring thickness is 0.4". I can not find this part listed in the spares manual so my question is this ; should this spacer the there or is it something a previous owner placed there for  some reason or another?  I would appreciate your comments before I put the clutch back together once I receive the locking washer that I ordered.

Was it there to shim the chainwheel into alignment with the engine sprocket?
A washer hould not really be there, omitting the lockwasher is a no-no.
I had similar breakdown but my hub had machined the tabs off the pressed steel chainwheel (long story but the Nova 5 speed mainshaft keyway was shallower than the original so the hub cracked when torqued up, unknown to me)
Tabwasher, clean threads and some Loctite thread locker and tightened to 60lbft.
If you need to push the clutch chainwheel forwards with that washer I would rather omit the washer and grind that amount off the spacer behind the engine sprocket (assuming that is the reason for the clutch spacer)..
