If so - I'd be interested to know your jet, needle and slide cutaway please.
I've mine in bits at the moment and getting some contradictory info regarding main jet size. Also whether or not you have an air filter.
Thanks
I would probably start with:
106 needle jet with clip in middle clip setting
3 1/2 slide cutaway
pilot jet will probably be fixed at 25 if it is an older carb.
The choice of main jet will depend on air filter vs no filter and, of course how restrictive that might be.
The typical filters are the conical K&N felt wire type which restrict very little vs the paper type in the pancake/perforated chrome version
If you use the perforated chrome then a 150 would be a reasonable option and if K&N 160 or 170
I would think that 180 would be safe place to start with the main jet if you are not using an air filter but you would probably need to do a couple of plug chops and experiment with air lever (assuming you have one fitted?).
What did you start of with?
Thanks Neil,
I have the 106 needle jet, 160 main and #3 slide. No air filter.
Amal recommend the same but with a 3.5 slide.
It seems lean up the top but playing with the air slide makes no difference.
It was running fine in cooler temps but now misfires occasionally, particularly when hot and been sitting for a while. I see fuel vapour coming out of the carb after shut off so I think the carb is getting too hot. It's also difficult to get a good idle and has to be adjusted to suit the temp at the time.
I have a new coil on order (it has a thorspark system) and a gasket set for the carb as well as a thicker Tufnell spacer to cool it down a bit. It has new plug, cap and lead also.
I've planned a plug chop route for full throttle so that should answer that.
Fingers crossed.
Sounds pretty close. You can get coated slides now too as upgrade if you need a 3 1/2. As you know the cut away is most important at low throttle settings coming off idle where you spend a lot of time around towns etc.
I put Tippex marks and tape on the throttle grip and body to help work out where the throttle is when working these things out. Of course worn bodies, worn needle jets and needles don't help.
I'm guessing your body is not worn or distorted, pilot jet is not crusted up. I also invested in à float bowl plug that has a pipe to install a manometer to make sure fuel level is correct when carb is on machine.
You can get nice thick Tufnol insulating blocks (plus gasket and +/- o-ring) which will all help to keep the carb cooler.
When set up properly with your inanition etc it should be like a metronome at tick over.
Cheers, the carb is fairly new and fitted by the previous owner I guess. Just a bit of fine tuning to get the best out of it hopefully. 🤞
