Title: Play in crinkle hub
Post by: iansoady on 22 May, 2024, 13:00
I have a hybrid BSA Starfire rolling chassis fitted with an unspeakable engine. It has the rear QD crinkle hub. I note that if I hold the brake on there is very slight rotational play - perhaps 1/4" at the outer side of the tyre - with a slight clunk when I move it. Is this likely to be the splines part bolted to the brake drum of the splines inside the hub? Or even loose bolts holding the former in place?

Many thanks.

Hi,

There will be some play in the splines unless both parts are new.  It is possible that there is a bit of movement in the bolts.  You may be able to see this.  If so then maybe only a 1/4 tun will tighten them enough.  Use a bit of thread lock and re-secure the lock tabs.

Dave.

Thanks Dave. I'll investigate a little further.

And you can buy a new spline insert for the brake drum which should cut down the play.
1/4" at the tyre is a lot, and you could probably feel the clonk when shutting off and opening up the throttle again?

The bike is something of a project at the moment so not able to test whether there is a noticeable clonk or not. But to ride it in that state would presumably hasten wear.

I've found the drum spline (outer spline) is often the first to wear. Try changing that first, then if there is still a decent amount of slop. Send the wheel in to be done.

It could be that the rivits holdng the tube in the hub are loose. I had this and it appears to be a common problem. SRM used to offer a repair but I can't find it now :-(.

I remember hearing about this in the past. There's no sign externally of the rivets fretting but will check. If I remember correctly, people used to weld the assembly up.
