Hi , I would like to know if the fibre gear and the dynamo gear are supposed to run dry or have some small amount of lube , like grease .? . I have fitted a brand new gear to an older fibre in good condition, and then I have had trouble with my magneto, needs rewind , and noticed some fibre dust , I think I will remove all the sharp edges from the new gear so it might engage more smoothly . Any info would be appreciated. Cheers .
It should be lubricated by all the oil floating around in the timing cover oil should be pumped into the cams.
Ok I haven't seen alot up there I know it's pumping oil and there's plenty in the cover . Ok cheers .
You should have rubber seals in the timing cover to seal onto the cam shafts.

Actually I just had a look , the magdyno shaft comes through the timing cover and it has a seal behind the magneto gear the fibre gear and the dynamo gear don't get that oil . As they are in a different housing behind the timing chest .😗
I put mine together with a little light grease on the fibre wheel. Seems OK.
I think there may be some confusion here. Idie is correct in saying that the gear is lubricated by oil in the timing case, but this is the Magdyno drive gear, with a seal on the boss.
Bigsingle is referring to the 2 gears behind the triangular cover..
Lucas stated in one of their Instruction sheets that the Celeron fibre gear should be lubricated by the application of a small amount of grease, and not run dry.
Unfortunately, fibre gears that arrive in the UK by ship seem to be of poor quality.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for that , my fibre gear looks really old , so I will add a little lube .cheers.
Sorry I thought it was the dive pinion. The gears in the mag dyno cover should be dry, there is a large spider that presses on the centre of the fibre wheel and acts as an overload clutch. The nut should be set at 12 ft lbs.
