I previously posted about the problems I had with my gearbox.
I now have found the problem. The casing has broken where the retaining screw is for the can plunger.
I assume I need a new case or could it be welded?
Thanks
Matthew
Well, that will be your problem. What size sprocket are you running? Anything bigger than a 21 T needs the hex shaving so that the chain clears the hex. I would suspect that the bolt has been backing itself out, clipped the chain and the chain rip the cupped bolt out of the case.
I have seen cases which have been welded up here. So I would go that route. But you will have to split the cases so a welder can get in and perform the work. You will need to check the plunger and how much it needs to go in as you may need to shorten the spring and trim the base of the plunger down a bit.
Hello
It has 20T sprocket.
Now I need to find a welder in Norfolk.
Thank you
Matthew
How did you manage to remove the clutch basket without removing the primary drive sprocket and chain too? Is the chain really slack?
Hello Ian
I pulled the clutch centre and fished the rollers out then there was just enough slack with a bit of wiggling to get basket off, which is what I have always done all the Triumphs and BSAs I have had. When I checked earlier in the year it appeared to be ok. Now it is all coming apart I will probably replace the chain.
Thanks.
Matthew
