Title: 1970 A65 Thunderbolt Fork oil/Issue
Post by: watts on 12 May, 2024, 10:46
If I lift the front end the forks drop and make healthy clunk.
I drained oil and about 140mm came out.
At full extension the spring is free to move about 1.5-2 inches.

I was wondering before taking them apart if this is either not a problem but a design feature or more or different oil will help.

I have attached a photo of the type of forks.

Thank you

The spring should not be free to move when it's at full extension. But you should have a bout an inch of sag between on full stand and off full stand, this is the springs taking up the preload.

You want between 190 and 200ml of oil in the forks.

Beware however, not all A65 springs are the same. Pre 69 springs (or pre shuttle valve forks) have different dimension springs to those post 69 or with shuttle valve forks.

Hello Allan

I crossed my mind that maybe the plastic sleeve between the bushes is squashed/damaged hence the gap and also the clunk?
I had a look on Dragonfly web page and they do aluminium ones I thought they were plastic?  Maybe this would help prevent the damage?

Thanks
Matthew

It's possible that the old ones haven't been fitted. They are normally a black plastic material and normally fine for the job. Might be worth stripping them down and
Seeing what you do have.

Hi Watts,

Could you post a photo of your forks, to establish that you do have the correct forks for your year of bike.
