Title: Another starting question A65 OIF Lightning
Post by: peasy on 07 May, 2024, 21:13
Hi all,

Still getting used to my 71 A65 OIF Lightning. 350 miles since rebuild so still running in.

I've got the plugs looking really good on mixture and the tickover pretty good.

Usually starts first kick after a tickle and no choke.

Question is when it's fired up it seems to take quite a long time to get the revs up and not miss on the blip of a throttle. Once warm all is well at all throttle levels and tickover etc..

I tried putting the choke on after it started just ans an test and that just drops the revs rather than increasing. Not sure what to try next or if this "slow to warm up" is just one of those normal quirks and I'll live with it.

Also for example yesterday I went to a local meet up and after a couple of hours parked up, tickle of both carbs then start up but on pulling off and accelerating there's a slight misfire which does clear very quickly once going.

I do like a fettle so will continue to find the sweet spots :-)

Thanks
Lewis

They're Amal Premier and new when the bike was rebuilt so 300 miles or so ago.

Thanks

Nice one, just worth knowing before I lead you up the garden path.

If the mixture is correct (correct for a hot engine) then it can take a little while
With the chokes on before you need to raise them. Sometimes a 1/4 mile down the road is far enough.

One thing worth checking though is your battery, if it's not accepting charge particularly well then it will give the symptoms your seeing. Once the alternator is kicking out enough juice it will behave normally as the battery will start acting like a capacitor.

If you have a spare battery. Fit it and see if it improves.

Thanks, battery is brand new so we're all good there.

Thanks for the advice on the chokes.

Cheers
