Title: removing Loctite SI 5990 - exhaust joint
Post by: hoogerbooger on 23 Apr, 2024, 19:24
intending to use Loctite SI 5990 when I refit the exhaust on my B40. I recall past advice saying it's tricky to remove. So checking if anyone can advise how tricky/ or best approach to removing?  Joints needs to be gas tight, but may well be coming apart again in the near future.

(The exhaust pipe fit in the head seems pretty tight, so perhaps not important there, but the silencer's clamp end is somewhat ovalised. Previous owner had put black goooo of some form on this joint, as well as the clamp).

Thanks cdsdorset2.   I've  just looked up RTV: "Room Temperature Vulcanisation".......... so isn't that any silicone that cures at room temperature ? .....and I presume Loctite 5990 is one.

(When I google high temp RTV silicone there are loads and I have no clue if they are any better or worse to use or remove.  The removing/detaching and cleaning up aspect is the one I'm most unsure about.....in case it is an absolute *ugger.)

High temperature RTV is very easy to remove. Like any other RTV it easily peels off.

I agree, ordinary bathroom silicone is fine. It will burn off where directly exposed to hot gas but will seal very well and is easy to get off.
