Hi,
Has anyone fitted inlet valve/guide seals to an A10? I have the opportunity to do this as suitable guides are fitted.
Dave.
I have used Norton type seals on the inlets on both iron and light alloy heads. No problems in use but no apparent differences in use between seal and no seal.
Currently using an ironhead with cast iron guides with no seals. No problems in use.
If the guides had been machined for seals I would fit them.
I dont like the seals with the garter springs as in the photo, I took them off before assembly.
Hi,
Thanks for the info. As I had already refitted the springs and do not have any seals to hand I will go without them. Also, as there had been a slight valve sticking issue I do not want to risk reducing the amount of oil getting to the valve stem.
Perhaps in the future I my retro fit seals if I need to take the head off for some reason.
Dave.
Hi Dave. I think I know what your problem is .
During your build I think you have fitted a new camshaft nut. The nut supplied by MCA is faulty as it has the wrong thread.
When you tighten it up you think it is good but it is not as tight as you think. The camshaft is still too far to the left. this leaves the cam too far to one side and so the cam picks up 2 lobes of the followers. When it gets far enough around the right hand exhaust valve springs off and clangs shut. Unfortunately I think you may have to remove the barrel to be able to trap the camshaft while you tighten the nut.
regards, Pat A.

Hi Pat,
The info. re MCA camshaft nuts is valuable for future rebuilds but fortunately, this was only a head overhaul.
I ran the engine without the rocker covers and I could see the righthand inlet stick at about half open. When the engine was stopped the valve then closed. The light hone of the guide that has been done should have resolved this so once the head is back on all should be fine.
