Title: 1966 C15 toolbox cover, back plate etc.
Post by: Tigerfeet on 18 Apr, 2024, 08:50
I'm having a bit of trouble assembling my C15 project cover plate, back plate etc.  The parts book shows various spacers - but I can't see where they go or why they are needed.

Firstly - have I got the cover plate fitted correctly in the picture - with both 'tabs' inside the bracket?

Secondly - can anyone explain where the 40-9020 and 66-8347 spacers fit?

Thirdly - Rupert's book details the dimensions of the spacer tubes that provide a positive stop for the side panel screws. He states they should be 1 5/8".My studs protrude 1 1/2" - and engage perfectly with the nuts in the side cover. They show no evidence of having ever been shortened - and I don't think the side cover would fit if they were longer.  My bike is 1966 - I'm wondering if my parts are later than those shown in the parts book? Or wrong in some other way. They do all fit together reasonably well, but without any of the specified spacers..

RE Q1: just had a look at my '65 B40 tinware. Can see no spacers for the fixings to the battery bracket, just nut and washer(s). I have a mix and match on inside/outside of bracket.......presumably the previous owner just decided it fitted better that way. Piccies of two top fixings.

RE: Q2:  where do 40-9020 and 66-8347 spacers fit? ......They don't seem to be fitted on mine. I've checked the 65 parts diagram...and I'm stumped too.

RE Q3: mine are 1 5/8"

Thanks for piccies and info!  I shall have another play about.  Might see if I can find an edging bead for the cutout in the cover plate - before I scrape off all the paint on the downtube...

Could it be that my black panel is correct - and that it is simply missing the tubes that slide over the studs - as shown on the green bike piccie that I found on Youtube?

Hi
I'm going to face this issue with my B40.
I think the C15 parts book is a bit confusing as it suggests the rubber sleeve (9020) sits inboard of the side panel inner whereas they fit inside the spacer bush (9009). The diagram also foreshortens the lengths of both items. The B40 book is better.
The spacer bush at 15/8" long has the rubber sleeve, which is shorter, in one end, this end is pushed over the threaded stud leaving space for the chromed nut that holds the side panel on. ie the chromed nut fits through the panel, screws onto the stud fitting inside the spacer bush, pulling the panel tight against the bush. (Hope that makes sense!)
That leaves the spacer (8348) which I think must fit between the battery carrier and the inner side panel.
Your inner panel looks fine, whether the tabs fit inside or outside the bracket I await further confirmation!
Let us know how you get on.

Ah! yes the 9020 rubber sleeve goes inside the case cover spacer. Removed one to check. The rubber sleeve is about 14mm long, so not long enough to have a spacing role at the chrome fixing nut end. It just seems to provides some flex to allow alignment ( and less rattle?)( presuming what I have are the right rubber sleeve and not some later bodge).

If 9009 is the spacer that the rubber bush fits inside, it is massively foreshortened in the catalogue. As for 8347 I'm left wondering if it's exactly the same as 9009 and the other spacer for the cover ?  I can't find any other spacers on my B40.

8347 is different to 9009 although I don't know how!
The parts book shows x2 9009s

Thanks for those piccies and info. At least one part of the puzzle is solved!

I spent some further time trying to fit the centre plate in various ways, but came back to having both tabs inside the bracket as being the best fit.

I have now found this picture online at https://www.classicbritishspares.com/blogs/news/1965-bsa-c15-ss80-project

This has the centre plate tabs arranged the same way I have.  Obviously it doesn't prove what the original BSA scheme was - but I'm going to consider this matter solved.
