Title: A65 primary oil capacity with Devimead btm end
Post by: DaveC on 07 Apr, 2024, 17:53
I am custodian of a friend's A65 OIF whilst he is abroad (so I don't know an awful lot about the model). Manuals tell me it should have 140cc of oil in the primary but I have just drained out over 750cc. I assume the crank oil seal has gone - but it has a Devimead bottom end conversion. I assume the primary and engine oil containment is still seperate? Could anyone help? Thanks in advance.

The Devimead conversion was only to divert how oil is fed from the big ends and the use of a combination needle roller bearing.

Some people do a "triumph mod" so that shares the primary oil from the main oiling system. For this the oil seal will have been removed and you "should see" several (usually 3) small drill holes below the bearing area to allow oil to drain back.

When I have had a seal go in the past I found that it only filled the primary when running. However the bike doesn't wet sump.

Mine went after a few hundred miles because the spacer which the oil seal runs on wasn't a polished surface, the seal ground away on it and did then smooth the surface over at the cost of a seal.

Allan, thanks for the information and confirming the Devimead mods. I haven't heard of the 'Triumph mod' so will have to investigate further. Trying not to do too much though with it being a friend's bike.

Hi,

I think part of the Triumph modification included a breather on the primary chain case otherwise the primary would be pressurised and leaks could occur.  So look for quite a large breather pipe on the primary chain case.

Thanks for the reply, Dave. There are no extra breathers on the primary case.

I think I will put 140cc of TQF in there and monitor closely for now. Assuming it is the crank seal, it will be interesting to see how quickly the level rises in there. (I don't know when it was last checked) I don't want to start stripping it down at this stage to investigate further as its not my bike. My mate who ownes it can do that on his return!

Cheers.
