Title: poor starting B40
Post by: dougc on 02 Mar, 2024, 08:40
Because my B40 was difficult to start and was not charging, I had the alternator tested and found it to be ok, new wiring harness and Boyer electronic ignition. It hasn't run since apart from a squirt of easy start, just to check it is timed ok. I've had the concentric carb apart and unblocked the pilot jet and thoroughly all the carb thinking that was it, tried to start the engine but still not a cough or a kickback. I have a good spark at the plug but nothing is happening in the cylinder.
Any ideas? I'm hoping to fix this myself and not have to involve a garage. I've rebuilt from a basket case and don't want to give in now.
Also the rotor on the ignition has 2 magnets, should I remove one? The Boyer instructions don't say so, so I have both in place still.

To run, you need a spark , fuel and compression.

Do you have a battery in your circuitry?  If not perhaps your boyer box is the type that doesn't need a battery, in which case ensure the lights are turned off.
Is the spark a good crisp blue crack?

Fuel , you've cleaned the carb, so hopefully that is good to go.
When you've been kicking it, whip the plug out, is it wet or dry?

Dry means no fuel getting into the engine . Wet means fuel getting in but spark not firing it.

Finally have you got reasonable  compression?

When you rebuilt the carb have you set it up corectly,I had a similar problem with my Starfire it turned out that I had the throttle stop screwed in too far so when I opened the throttle a bit to start the bike the throttle was too far open backed it off until it was just touching the throttle slide and bike started Ok also the pilot adjuster screw should initially be only one and a half turns out to start with.

I've found that mk1 concentric pilot airways are quite prone to getting blocked and forcing carb cleaner and compressed air repeatedly is the way to go.  I have two filters in my system (petrol tap gauze and the filter in the banjo but my oem steel tank does not like E5 fuel and makes sludge.
Also are you using fresh fuel from the pump?  New production fuel seems to go off in no time.
Advice re settings is good, throttle stop just up, pilot 1 turn out.
Presume your jets are standard spec?
