Hi All,
The blessed B40 is progressing slowly. I've done a dry run on the crank and the gearbox.
At first the gearbox locked up, it turned out to be the kickstart ratchet pawl(?) which would not allow the kickstart to rotate, I think it is a pattern part (so beloved of RR) and the indent for the plunger is not deep enough so the pawl stuck out to far to allow the ratchet to work. Solved by substituting another (old stock?) pawl.
So the gearbox now rotates and changes gear (albeit clunkily).
My questions are:
Is .010" ok for main shaft endfloat? And ...
Should the kickstart pawl make such a pronounced clicking? (There's no oil in the box yet).
Many thanks
When the kickstart is in its "at rest" position the kickstart pawl is pushed inwards and out of engagement with the ratchet steps (inside the gear) by the stop plate which is attached to the inner cover. Hence there should be no clicking noise unless the kickstart is pushed down with the engine running.
Aha, that makes sense. I must have misaligned the kickstart shaft.
I've also answered my own Q about mainshaft endfloat, it should be "barely perceptible" so I'll need to look into that. I suspect the splines on the mainshaft may have worn back, their colour certainly suggests they have been very hot at some point.
Many thanks
Kickstart now sorted, proper assembly is a wonderful thing! Main shaft endfloat still a bit more than I'd like but not excessive.
So inner timing case on, screwing in the clutch actuating arm and I notice that the 'bucket' that holds the ball bearing is broken!
Has anyone made up a replacement? Should the bearing be recessed or stand proud?
Thanks
