Title: A10 rear hub rebuild
Post by: topher on 05 Feb, 2024, 14:18
1950 A10 plunger. The rear brake drum chainwheel bearing has a shim on the drive side, 67-6072 in the diagram. I've been sent one which is supposedly the right one, according to a couple of sources anyway. It's quite different from the original but I was told it will be held in place by the spindle. Is that correct, did they start making them smaller? It just don't seem right!

The new shim looks like , for a A65, been busy on a 1970 Qd rear wheel last weekend,  maybe?.

Hi,

The shim/dustcover is held in against the bearing by the cir-clip.  It rotates with the brake drum so is not trapped by the spindle which obviously does not rotate.

Dave.

Thanks, yes that was my thinking. To be honest it's not the first time I've had the wrong part sent under the right part number. I guess it happens.

Perhaps you were supplied with the rigid frame part 67 6033?

Below from the 1951/52 parts book.

Yes quite possibly. Definitely different to the one used on the plungers.

Another question - would a modern sealed bearing obviate the need for the shim? Although there would be a slight gap between the outer bearing race and the retaining circlip, this could potentially be taken up with a suitable flat type shim?

Hi,

I always use sealed bearings in wheels.  I have reused the standard shim but if it was too battered I do not see why a washer of the same thickness  would not be suitable.
