Title: BSA M10 or M20 or??
Post by: opawel87 on 02 Feb, 2024, 20:35
Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and BSA. I do not own a BSA bike, at least not yet;)
A friend of mine has a barn find/project bike, which he offered to me. I'm not an expert in this field, but I'm tempted to give it a go and endure a new hobby of old motorcycle restoration.

He wasn't sure what model or year the bike was, but he thought it was from 1930s.

I did a bit of googling and found M10 or M20 similar.
Unfortunately, I have no frame or engine number. I will get it next month when I go and see him, but I'm eager to learn about it a bit more beforehand.

I have attached a few photos and would appreciate any help in identifying the model.

Many thanks

Looks like an early post WW2 250cc C10 side valve.

Not the pre war version as these had a different gearbox, a rear stand and the oil tank/fuel tank combined. The photo bike has a centre stand and separate oil tank.

Thank you for the speedy reply. Indeed, it looks like C10.
I thought that it was pre-war due to the way how the front suspension looked.
Maybe it's an older suspension and a newer engine?

The early post war C10s had girder forks.

Below from the BSA brochure dated August 1945.

I think the telefork C10 came in spring 1946.

Thank you very much for the brochure and additional information!
I have already saved the brochure for the printout :)

I can't wait to go and see the bike, what parts are missing and check the frame and engine number for further validation. But even without the numbers, it looks like you have found the bike.

Once again, thank you very much.
Best.

Definitely a post war model C10 with the separate oil tank and rear facing oil pipes. The 1940 model has the forward facing oil pipes and the oil tank is combined in the petrol tank. I suspect it's an XC10 model. Here is my WD WC10.  Ron

I think I would leave it just where it is.  It needs new wheels and tyres (20 inch..?) and a host of other expensive parts.   Maybe that mountain bike would be a better restoration, it just needs some oil of the chain..

Hi,

The frame, engine, gearbox and forks look OK and the hubs could well be usable.  Most restorations need new wheel rims etc.  Before writing it off have a proper look.  Try to see if the engine turns over and that the gear box can be turned.  You will get lots of support from this Forum and if you join the BSAOC even more help.  It will also depend on the price.  Free would be best but why not ask the question on this Forum.  How much?

Dave.

Thank you for all your responses and tips. When I go and see him, I'll check everything.
I believe he has the wheel rims, which, in theory, should be restorable. I didn't know I'd need new ones... anyway I'll see the condition of everything.
Unfortunately, I can't have it for free as he wants £400-£500 for the lot. It still seemed like a fair price. What do you think guys?
There are some more parts/spares.
I have attached some more photos where I can see another gearbox, which could be handy.

I would look for the speedo and headlamp assembly - both expensive if missing.

I managed to see my friend sooner than expected.
Missing parts are the handlebar, speedo, springs from the seat and rear breaks. The wheels are beyond repair. The tank also looks iffy. I was not able to establish whether anything else was missing. The engine turns and has a compression. Gearbox also works. There is a separate engine and gearbox. Frame and engine numbers do not match, but I read that often they didn't. My main problem is that the bike has no papers or registration plate. Is it possible to check whenever the bike was reported stolen just on the frame number? The more I think of it, the less desirable the whole project looks
