Title: Rocket three tappet adjusters
Post by: Tav on 31 Dec, 2023, 09:57
Good day everyone. I've just become the owner of a 1970 rocket three. It was purchased as a non runner and had been idle for a good time. It only had compression on number 2 cylinder luckily for me I traced the issue to incorrect tappet clearance.for some reason they had been well overtightened so the valve were never closing. Once this was set correctly she fired up and sounds sweet. But my issue is this. The half nut to lock the tappet in place is flush to the head of the tappet. This could be correct but doesn't seem right to me. Did they use longer tappet adjusters? Any information would be great. Thanks in advance and a happy new year to all

a later t160 tappet is shorter than a t150 or rocket111  tappet.
mushroom head tappets cannot be removed without removing the rocker cover. so if it runs ok leave it.

It may pay to to take out the little round inspection caps from rocker box just to check all the push rod are correctly located on the ball of rocker arms , just to be safe

rocket 3 valves have a longer stem than later t160 valves , so someone may have put a t160 one in . if thats the case you will be able to see the difference and buy a valve lash cap to fit between the valve and tappet . if the pushrod has jumped out the performance drop would be noticeable.
