Title: wet sumping
Post by: maddogmargetts@yahoo.co.u on 12 Dec, 2023, 17:23
I got one of those gadgets to put on the oil pipe to stop wet sumping. Which pipe does it go on the outer or inner?

Wotcha.

On my B31 it fits to the rear. . .  the inner.

Can someone smarter than me tell me what is the root cause of wet sumping?  Is that caused by weak spring valve in timing cover?

Don't claim to be smarter but:
- yes weak spring, dirt under ball can do it
- wear in oil pump where oil can leak under gravity from tank, down pipe, past pump into sump, given the time intervals mentioned (sometimes years of standing) not surprising.
These pumps are for flow to ball and roller bearings, splash to little end, piston rings and valve gear (not like plain journals that need pressure) so as long as pump moves (is not seized) and shifts oil I would not worry unless you are racing.
The automatic spring loaded valve in the supply line worked well for me on my B31/B33.
Some people use a turn tap but this relies on you remembering to switch it on before you start so you need a chain or cord on your handlebar twist grip to the tap so you cannot.
I'd go for the automatic one if I needed it on a cooker like these.  My 600 has an ABSAF pump but then horses for courses!
