Title: 1935 Blue star QD front brake rod.
Post by: Iandaw on 11 Dec, 2023, 23:38
Hi all.  I'm struggling to find any info on a QD front brake rod for my 35 blue star.
I haven't been able to source one.
Does any have a drawing of one with sizes or even one that can be copied?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm sure someone will come up with a better answer than this, but in the meantime here are some thoughts.
Firstly, I have never seen one of these rods for sale, so I think you will have to make one.
You will need some 3/16" steel bar, threaded at one end. The top end screws into an adjusting sleeve with a lock nut fitted. This is an odd looking thing, 5/16" diameter, with a square on one end, the other end is slotted with a cavity for the cable ball nipple. You may get an idea from the picture in the Parts Book.
This sleeve moves up and down inside the outer sleeve which is threaded into the lug on the forks. This is a hollow tube with a hexagon and external thread on one end. It also has an internal thread to accept the cable adjuster 1/4" Cycle thread, so don't drill it all the way through at 5/16" clearance for the adjusting sleeve. Again, the Parts book will give you an idea of what it looks like.
Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of the quick release mechanism, which has a cup, tube and end cap.
If you are able to make and fit all these bits, then you will be able to work out the correct length of the rod.
If it were me, I would thread the lower end of the rod and simply screw on a clevis and locknut. These are threaded to accept a screw and thin locknut, rather than a clevis pin.

If it's anything like the one fitted to the early M20's. I have a perfect reproduction fitted to my 1940 WD M20. Made by a guy in Netherlands. I do know a guy in Ireland who has some in stock. PM me for his contact details if required. Ron
