Is it possible to fit an oil pressure gauge to an a65 lightning 1967

Hello paul, yes it can. I have this bsa for over 30 years now and the former owner did this.
a65 engine 1963.
Drilled and threaded and used loctite, works for me.

Hi,

I think the '67s had the oil warning light so this is where a pressure gauge can fitted.

Not until 69 dave, that was the first year of it.

Also 69 used NPT thread switch. Changed to NPS switch in 1970 as people were over tightening the taper fitting and cracking the cases.

Hi,

There has been discussion about warning light vs pressure gauge.  I have an A65 with a warning light and one with a pressure gauge.  I suppose it is a matter of personal choice but I find the light the best as it tells me there is the minimum of pressure required at tick over and if it comes on at any other time there is a problem that needs to be investigated.
The pressure gauge was already on the other bike and it tells me I have great pressure on start up which gradually goes down as the engine warms up and then goes up again as the revs go up until the centrifugal affect of the spinning crank caused it to go down again as the crank sucks the oil though reducing the pressure created by the pump and then up again as slowing down and revs reduce and the pump now creates pressure again. A bit of a distraction perhaps.
I think that very few manufacturers ever fitted oil pressure gauges.  I believe Norton had one fitted as standard but then stopped because of the complaints from owners about fluctuating pressure.

I think a properly working oil pressure switch (light) is satisfactory. I think the switches that David Drew sells have a cut off at 9psi as opposed to the standard 7psi for the 70-on switches or 5psi for the 69' switch.

If the light isn't coming on then you have a suitable amount of pressure compared to the flow. The more you rev the more flow you need, if there is sufficient then you will not light the switch, but if the flow is less than the resistance at the journals then the pressure will drop less than the minimum.

I think sometimes we forget that our bikes covered more miles in the first 10 years of their life and suffered less mechanical experience than many can offer today and with poorer quality oils than many of us will ever do on them... and yet we want more positive feedback from the bike (like a pressure gauge) which we didn't have before.

Change the oil frequently and use a GOOD quality oil and these motors (especially A65's) will last a very long time, providing it has been built properly.
