Title: Unknown Bsa C15t trials brake cable? Snapped need a replacement See photo.
Post by: Flatcap46 on 09 Dec, 2023, 17:36
Hello, I am wondering if anyone can help me with my front brake cable it's non-standard and has snapped its the same as the clutch side. It's 37 inches long. It's on my C 15 trials. The adjuster and the  threads seem to be part of the cable and nonremovable any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I don't know what that is but can you not make up a new one from a universal cable kit? Just need to fit the adjuster on before soldering the nipple?

Feked do the levers with the adjusters included-

For these I think you'd need to make your own cable although some places sell Doherty type cables with a knurled adjuster rather than the star type.
Hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about will come along. By the way I've just made a new front brake cable for my C15T with bantam brakes and Domino levers. I bought a venhill kit locally and had to reuse the  outer from the originsl cable and it worked a treat. I think you can do the same if you're happy make your own. It's easy.
Edit - there seems to be a slot in the feked ones so I guess the cable would just slide in with the nipple fitted.

It looks like the threaded adjuster is made of steel, and the ferral of the cable is brass, so they should be separate items.
If it is OK to use the old outer, then just the inner needs replacing, with the proper nipples soldered on each end.
Poke the wire through the nipple, then splay the last 3mm of each strand of the wire, before soldering with lots of flux cored 60/40 solder.
Cleanliness is essential, even to the extent of polishing the solder with a Scotchbrite Pad before use.

That type of star shaped adjuster seems to have been used by BSA on their cables around 1967-68.
The aluminium lever bracket I have a distant memory is a genuine Amal part and was standard fitment on Mk2 or 3 Spitfire? But I could be wrong on that. I think that some aftermarket copies of that design of lever/bracket have also been available, to suit the star shaped cable adjuster.
To replace your broken cable like for like, try Johnsons cables or trawl the internet for original BSA cables of that type.
Or -
- slot both adjuster and threaded ferrule to remove them from the cable so they could be fitted onto a replacement cable
- fit the more common type of handlebar lever which accepts cables with either the star shaped adjuster or the round knurled adjuster.
