Title: Silencer recommendations for C15T please
Post by: KernowPete on 08 Dec, 2023, 16:12
Hi,
My 1960 C15T has one of those straight through perforated tube silencers. It's really very loud. I've just been refused entry to our local trials practice ground due to the noise.
Can anyone recommend a quiet trials silencer for my bike? Are the Terry Weedy ones (Avery) quiet/any good?
Thanks

Does the perforated tube come out? If so, you have an absorption baffle silencer. It should have fibreglass wadding wrapped round it, which has to be replaced every so often. I had this sort of silencer on a road bike years ago; I repacked it and it became rather quieter.

You can buy repacking kits. These are often used in 2-strokes, but the bike I did it on was a 4-stroke. Here's a link:

Thanks Rog, yes it's an absorption type but the tube is welded or brazed in so not straight forwards to remove. It's also very short maybe 7-8 inches to the main body. I have considered cutting it open and attempting to repack it but I've no idea what the current packing is (some kind of fibre is in there) so I'm a bit nervous of hacking into it with a grinder or hacksaw. It would be a lot of work too and I'm sceptical about the potential outcome.
I'm considering having a go at make one like the Terry Weedy one just for kicks.

If you can get the tube out somehow, there are silencer baffle tubes on Ebay of various sizes. Some of them come as a kit, with fibreglass matting and securing wire. If you click on my previous Ebay link, then search for "absorption baffle exhaust" you'll see a selection.

Thanks Rog,
I've taken a picture so you can see what I'm dealing with. I can't see this ever being effective and it will probably get destroyed in an attempt to repack it. It quite suits the bike so I'll get a short universal for now that looks a bit similar but is in new condition and repackable.

Neither pretty or practical!

Indeed. Much like the rest of the bike 🤣
