Question:- Do all all B31 cams have quieting ramps?
I set too to check the tappet today following the procedure in the BSA owners hand book taking note of the importance to get the cams in the right place to check the setting. Having done that turning the engine over to TDC on the compression stroke I found there was a great deal of clearance on the exhaust valve so re set to the book again thinking I had made a mistake but no, all good.
Removing the timing cover all cam wheel markings were correct to the book.
Puzzled I set the engine back to TDC as I do on my Norton ES2 and re did the clearances to 0.003.
The engine runs, is quiet with the right amount of tappet noise and good compression so am still confused as to why setting to the book didn't work but setting at TDC did.
I do thèse at TDC on compression stroke, assuming stock cams.
Goldies are different and you have to do these in specific sequence as per the handbook.
Find TDC then move the engine back until you find the point where the inlet valve is just closed. Now adjust the exhaust tappet.
Now turn the engine forward until the exhaust is just on the point of opening. You can now set the inlet clearance.
I've attached the procedure from the manual.
Thanks for your replies. All sorted. Embarrassingly I had not read the hand book correctly!
