Title: log book/ frame and engine number
Post by: mandy [s] on 09 Nov, 2023, 19:38
hi,going to start next rebuild next spring time, engine and frame probably not matching, i new when i purchased for very little money so it did not bother me,it is all in bits apart from engine which has been rebuilt, now the engine number starts ZA104..,  and frame is BA7618..., now looking on line the engine za10 belongs to 1950 plunger, which most of the parts i have are plunger/ gold flash, the frame i have is a plunger, on the logbook dvla says the frame number and engine number dates the frame and engine as 1955,i am wondering if the bike was built to order and thats when it was handed to the owner?, also the dvla list it as bsa and no model next to it, so wondering should i build it to 1950 spec or 55 spec? i shant be spending thousands on it, and plan to ride it myself if i like the plunger style. any thoughts on this would be appreciated .

The 1955 bike has simply had a change of engine at sometime in its life. Not built that way at the BSA factory. Not unusual to find bikes that have had an engine change. The V5C unlikely to show a model because the DVLA computer does not know BSA models.

Perfectly normal for no model to be shown. One of mine has the make and model down in the 'make' field. As long as the frame matches the logbook you're fine. Restore it to the year of the frame.

Two of mine aren't matching numbers. One has an engine that is the correct year while the other came with an engine that was two years newer. That marque were virtually all parts bin specials when new anyway! No two are quite the same.
