Post by: bikerbob on 09 Nov, 2023, 17:31
I have 1970 Starfire and the previuos owner fitted a new silencer but I have found out that it is a silencer fitted to the early models part No 40-2841 the 1970 models had a silencer part No 70-9652 can some one tell me what the difference is as my bike seems unusally very loud. thanks

Hi, '70 Starfire used the silencer from 1969 to start with, new shape (shown in parts book) and improved silencing to suit USA regs. Mid season changed to a long megaphone silencer of the type later used on the oif twins.
First type is not available now as far as I know (I have a few used examples, PM me if you want one).
Second type I think is available as a pattern copy for A65, but to use one you would need a reducer to suit the Starfire pipe diameter and the mounting bracket may not be in the right place.
Rupert.

Thanks for that info  Ihave listened to a couple of videos of the Starfire and read some reviews and they do seem to be quite loud so I think I will stay with what I have got for now, but I am going to alter the mount to get the exhaust pipe to go further into the silencer as at the moment it only goes in 20mm which does not seem correct I would have thought it would be at least twice that. From the part numbers I have looked at the exhaust pipe numbers differ from early to later models. I reckon I have a early silencer with a later exhaust pipe which would account for the 20mm.
