How do stop the magneto turning when you do this nut up.

If you mean in relation to the pinion when setting up the ignition timing, place a suitable socket against the pinion and give it a smart tap or two. I think this is before you put the nut on, but this early in the morning I can't remember for sure. But this will seat the pinion on the taper enough for the nut to be done up without shifting the timing.

Hi,

The tap idea usually works.  Next you have the magneto off the bike take the pinion and using some fine grinding paste lap the tapers together.  It does not have to as good as a valve seat but it will greatly improve the affect of the tapping of the pinion on to the shaft.  Make sure all traces of the grinding paste is washed off.
This works on the idler gear/dynamo sprocket taper and is very affective on the gear box main shaft/clutch centre taper.
Again clean it really well after doing this.

Dave.
