Hello !
The sludge trap of my 1970 twin had never been opened.
Sludge quantity is very low as you can see.
Indicated mileage is 14000...
Realistic, considering this fact ?
Hi,
I would say that it is quite clean for the mileage. It would be interesting to know what oil it has been run on and if it has a filter fitted.
Dave.
No filter .
No information about the oils used .
I acquired her 6 months ago.
This bike has been imported from England about 13 years ago. And has been well maintained but very rarely used since then.
Hi Jean-Luc,
Are the big ends/shells and bore standard? If they are then it would support the idea of never having been disturbed.
Dave.
Not undone them yet.
I hesitate disturbing them as there is no felt play...
Valves and guides are new.
New +020 pistons too.
But low oil pressure at idle when hot.
Ring is to be replaced because gap with crank is 12/100 mm.
An SRM pump is ordered.
The engine should then last more than me.
You would be silly not to remove the rods. You also need to remove the rods when cleaning the sludge trap otherwise there's a high chance of getting sludge through the shell and destroying what is left of the shells. If the journal measures on spec then a new set of shells of the same size will be a great thing to do. The SRM shells are very good.
Also if there is any damage to the journal, you want to address it now rather than later.
You are right Allan.
I will remove the rods and clean everything for a complete check.
Here is the link to the topic I've created on my french BSA forum.
Sorry, it's in French but there are pictures .

Good morning Jean-Luc,
The link is very interesting and a translation through Google helped.
I see there are a number of British bike gatherings in France. Are they open to everybody? It would be great to attend some if that is possible.
Dave.
