I want to clean out and repack the front wheel bearings. (I intend to fully rebuild the wheels at a later date: at the moment I want to get the bike rideable.)
Am I right in thinking that by releasing the bearing locking ring I will get some access at the brake side side? And if I prise out the dust cover at the left I will get some access that side?
And there is no way of getting more access without knocking the spindle out, which involves knocking the brake side bearing out - which will then be goosed.
Thanks
Hi Tigerfeet,
If the bike has covered a high mileage that is possible with 1966 bike and the bearings are the originals then they probably need replacing anyway.
If there is any noise after washing out all of the grease then it is better to replace them. These days most people fit sealed bearings. If you go down this route get a good make to the correct spec.
Dave.
I've been using RS-1 bearings (or removing the inner seal) so the outside of the hub is sealed and I can still loosely pack the inside of the hub - old habits die hard!
