Does anyone know whether the late C15s were 12v? Or were they all 6v?
Also - I'd guess it was possible to retrofit a 12v alternator?
Is it possible to tell from the appearance of the alternator whether it is 6v or 12v?
I'm in the early stages of working out what I have got with this project bike....
As far as I'm aware all C15 were 6v and normally would have a 3 wire alternator. All 6V alternators can be converted to 12V preferably by the use of a modern rectifier/regulator. I have attached an article I wrote for the Scottish Classic Motorcycle Club a few years ago about converting 6V bikes to 12V.
I'm pretty sure they were still 6v.
Do you have 3 wires coming from the alternator.
You can join these in a particular fashion and convert your 6 v alternator to 12v
Nice and easy conversion

That's a nice clear article Derek, one question: do I need to change anything about how the headlight switch works after swapping to 12v?

If you use a modern regulator as in the bottom diagram you don't need to do anything to the switch wiring as the alternator is no longer connected to the switch but goes direct to the regulator.
