Hi all
I converted my RGS from K2f mag to electronic ign for what I thought was going to be more reliable turns out it has now destroyed 3 ing coils have Not got a clue as to why it has done that.... spoke to a guy at Wassell and he said the first 2 coils I used were the wrong ones, it should have had a part no WW19371 so I found one and it has only been on the bike for less that a mouth..... the last friday it packed up on the way home ...... mr AA man came out and it was the coil again gone.... well what would you know ha :(
so the thing is has anyone had anything like this happened to them ? also spoke to mr Wassel again today he said just fit a new WW19371 coil ............ I thought he is having a laugh ..just getting to the point of Not wanting to go out for fear of letting me down yet again.
Has anyone got any ideas what it could be ...... I have done all the checks on the wiring the voltage as its had the Dynamo all re-done and with a new DVR2 regulator fitted checked all earth connections and made sure the positive earths are all good.
Just getting a bit silly Now......and making me dont want to take her out.
Hi,
What were the coils that failed?
Some of the twin lead coils come with a heatsink but even if one is not supplied I think that the instructions say to use one to avoid overheating. Did yours have one?
Dave.
I've just had a look at this coil of yours
"Can be used with early Japanese bikes with cb points"
Primary 3 ohms and secondary 12k
If your bike is fully electronic ignition , then surely you need a ht coil compatible with electronic switching.
What make is your electronic kit?
Regarding the dual outlet 12 volt coil you are using I have used these on several bikes ,with no problems and they have cover more miles than can think inc overseas trips etc ,ignition system used either Pazon or the VAPE ,may be just lucky ? Coils do be if it from keeping cool and mounting nicely ,oh just a note is to make sure machine is not over charging , all the best ,
Echo'ing Dave Bradys comments, how is your coil mounted? the Vape should be fine with a 3-5 ohm ignition coil or combined resistance of that if using 2x coils in SERIES. half this if using a 6v system.
Is your charging system stepped up to 12v?
Does the coil have a connection back to the battery on the positive side as well as being connected to the red lead on the black box?
Hi All.
well the set up is a wassell with the duel coil that they advised to use with the system is a part No WWW19371 that's is the coil that has just failed...... the other two coils were both twin outlet and said to fit any electronic ing system... but as I say the one that is meant to be used with the wassell system is also the one that failed, this is the one that I have fitted on my bike, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254071685404
also the Dynamo has just been reconditioned and fitted with a DVR2 regulator and I checked that they is 12.6 volts going to the black Box.
oh hi dave .....no as to the heatsink as mine did not come with one or I have not got one either..... and I have the coil mounted under the seat on the cross rail so air flow go`s under the tank and the seat so plenty of air go`s though there.
If 3 coils have fried in such a short space of time, then surely they are getting too many amps , .
When the bike is running , the battery regulation should be about 14 volts
Too many amps or the coil isn't grounded to the battery as I mentioned, but this has yet to be answered.
well the new coil turned up today along with the new black box, I have fitted both and the coil seems to run at 100 F how hot should one be then ?
I have also put a meter on the charging side of things and it is reading 12.8 volts. then revved it to 4,500 ish and it is kicking out 13.7 volts so the reg is doing its job, also I fitted another earth from coil to ground....... don't know where else to go............ yes someone said go back to a Mag :-* ;D
You're not pumping 12 volts into a 6 volt coil are you. If using to 6 volt coils make sure that they are in series not in parallel. In parallel they will very soon get hot and burn out.
No its a 12 volt duel coil ............. I was going to use a pair of 6 volt coils from a Norton as they are the smaller Dia ones
which can hid up better...... but Wassel said to use the duel coil of their use with all the kits which is a 12 volt duel coil part No WW19371
:D :-\ :-* :o
With a dual output coil, you need a metal connection between the iron core that pokes out of each end of the coil. Without it the coil will fun fine and actually give a better spark when it's cold, but the coil will heat up quickly internally without this connection between each side of the iron core. This is why they call it a heat sink.
As I say, if you haven't all ready got one, you need an additional wire back from the positive side of the coil going to the positive side of the battery, not the frame but going to the battery or a common post which on the same bolt has a wire back to the battery.
If you don't do this then you can damage the black box but also the coil.
I have it mounted the coil on a bit of 1 inch angle iron with holes drilled into it to aid air flow and across the middle cross bar of the frame above the battery so it is mounted on that which I hope will disperse the heat as well ...I hope... also got air flow from under the the tank and seat too....
also have a earth strap from the iron core to the frame but Not from the core positive side of the coil to the battery as thought that it gets that from the frame as its positive earth..so are you saying that I should also put a wire from the positive on the coil to the battery positive as well ? I also have mounted a 12 volt fan to blow cold air up onto the coil too .....as thought that might help. ;D ::) Try anything at this stage ha 8)
You shouldn't need a wire from the iron core to the frame or battery, this itself doesn't need to be grounded, it just needs a metal to metal connection to each side of it to create a loop. You've used the angle iron, so as long as you've made posts and bolted through it and it's not obstructed by paint, then it'll work fine.
The wire from the positive side of the coil is as per the instructions for the electronic ignition, as I say... you can use a common post on the frame, providing that common post also has the lead back to the battery, but try not to rely on the frame itself for being an electrical path - especially for delicate electronics.
