Title: Erratic running
Post by: chrisx1 on 27 Sep, 2023, 10:03
Had a good ride on my A65 a few days ago. The rocker box was leaking due to screws all loose. Took it off, put more Wellseal on reassembled went out for test ride yesterday and it's running terrible.
Took the carb off, everything seemed ok but gave it a clean anyway. Put it back on engine smoking a lot and running worse than ever.
Any ideas?

Is the float sticking? Or is the float needle seat damaged?

White plastic or black stayup float?

Black smoke could be over fuelling - hence the float question.

Also check the top surface of the float bowl isn't warped. Ie it should be flat. If it isn't flat. DONT skim it, either pull it back into shape or buy a replacement bowl.

Hi Alan. The carb is a new Premium Concentric, so shouldn't be faulty. Smoke could have been carb cleaner still in system possibly.
I've just kicked it over with the plugs out and I have a healthy spark on r/h side but weak yellow spark on left.
They are new 6 volt coils with a new electronic ignition.
Possibly faulty coil?

Hi, I had electronic ignition fitted to my A50 (Wassell Vape Micro MK1) and they do appear to give a weak spark, seem to remember reading somewhere that it looks weak due to very short duration of spark.
Have you checked your ignition timing?
Anyway my stator did not test to the spec stated (see my recent post) so I changed back to points and all is good.

Hi,

Between having a good ride a few days ago and resealing the rocker cover something happened.  Assuming that you did not do anything else to the bike it is possible that the problem was about to manifest itself but your ride came to an end.
The black smoke that may have been carb cleaner should now be through the system so assuming a clean and adjusted carb the issue could be the spark/ignition. Also, until the carb cleaner is all gone through it would affect the function of the carb.
Try swapping the leads over on the coils and see if the weak spark moves as well.  If so then it could be HT lead, plug cap or even the plug.

Dave.

Good points Dave, I will give those ideas a go.

Is the smoke black or white?   Black = fuel.  White = oil.

It was black smoke, possibly from the carb cleaner fluid.

swapped the HT leads still the same, so that eliminated the leads and cap. Still need to get a new set of plugs and try that. I'm worried I may have cooked the black box as its mounted ontop of oil tank.

Hi,

I have a Boyer box on top of the oil tank and no problems over many thousands of miles.

Glad to here that. Hopefully the box is ok then. Will look at alternator next.

Surely if it was running well before the rocker box came off, it has to be something to do with that. Do you know what caused the screws to loosen?
My first thought would be to lift the rocker box and check the valve clearances and while you are there check the head is at the correct torque.

Yes, I think the head gasket is blowing again. I'm going to re torque and try that as soon as I get a chance.

if its blowing, the head needs to come off, be cleaned up, gasket re-annealed and both head and barrel checked for flatness.

also check you bolt length. they should be able to screw fully home WITHOUT use of washers, ensuring that they won't bottom out when washers are used. also the washers should be about 2.3mm thick (0.092") minimum. ones supplied are often too thin.

Hi,

Once you have refitted the head gasket it is always a good idea to re-torque after perhaps 200 miles as the gasket will settle and it ensures the correct torque.  After that the gasket will last until you need to take the head off again.

 :) :) :) :)

Just a point on bolts 'bottoming out'.

I had the situation, self inflicted with a 'blow' front RH side of head. Retorqued started motor still blowing. Removed head checked to ascertain head and barrell were good--yep  :'Annealed gasket. Refit, re-torque still blowing. Removed the head dug around with a screw driver in all the bolts holes. rubbish in the front RH corner bolt hole. Cleaned, flushed (this gets boring). Bolted up, started--- solved--- as I said self inflicted. It really is a B when you cant find anyone to blame.

Interesting info guys. I will have to be more thorough, like yourself Mike and make sure everything is perfect. I did have problems annealing the gasket. I have an electric cooker, so had to try annealing with a blow torch but I just couldn't really get it to the desired colour as I have in the past on the old gas ring.
