Title: A65 sump plate and strainer gauze
Post by: Tjwood on 20 Sep, 2023, 19:51
Hi. I've recently acquired the bottom end of a 1968 A65T. I took the sump plate off and found that the strainer gauze is wrecked. The plate is flat and the gauze is shaped like an inverted cup with an eyelet in it that sits over a pickup pipe inside the crankcase. The problem is that the only replacement gauzes I can find are flat not 'inverted cup' shape and seems to be permanently fixed to the plate. Anyone know where I can get the strainer gauze and plate that I need?
I had thought about replacing the whole plate and gauze unit (e.g. the SRM one) but the only ones I can find have a plate that is 'normal cup' shape with a flat gauze, but that won't work for my crankcase as the pickup tube will be sitting half an inch above the gauze not in the eyelet.
Any help gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Regards
Tony

Hi Tony,

I have the SRM item on my A65's, the pickup tube will still enter the gauze unless it has been bent upwards.

Hi Allan. Thanks for your reply. The end of my pickup tube sits well above the bottom open edge of the crankcase where the sump plate bolts on so I guess it's been bent upwards at some stage. I'll see if I can bend it down so that it will fit or into an SRM-type strainer unit.
Regards
Tony

Try not to add too much force as you don't want to damage the case where it goes in to.

Could you post a photo?

Hi Tony,

I agree with Allan. Go gently with adjusting the pipe.  When I did the finned sump plate conversion on my A65, the pickup didn't line up correctly with the new gauze plate hole.  After consultation with SRM, a careful tweak moved it into place nicely.

The SRM conversion is well worth doing as it adds extra cooling capacity and an easy sump drain.

If in doubt, give the guys at SRM a call and tell them what your situation is and what they can advise, before you order.  I'm sure they'll be happy to help.

Cheers,
Rob
