Have had new stanchions & seals fitted but am surprised at the pressure needed to compress the springs. The springs protude approx 7" above the chrome covers before fitting. Is this normal. I have a tool for lifting them in to place but the force needed seems excessive. The suggestion in the handbook that this might be done with a broom handle seems highly unlikely to be possible. Are the seals in the correct position. They were fitted by a BSA specialist.
The seals can only fit in one place. How are you trying to compress the springs. Not by hand I hope. You need the right tool to screw into the station and feed through the top yoke and wind up with the large nut.. You can make your on tool by grinding down an old fork nut and drilling a hole through it typing it and using a length of studding and spacers to pull up the station against the spring pressure.
Thanks. I have the tool but the springs need compressing quite a bit before the tool will fit. The springs are about 11" long in total & I reckon they will need to be compressed by about 8". Is that normal?
Hi,
Are the stanchions fully extended? Sometimes they can stick at the bottom of the slider.
Dave.
